1 Samuel 16:7

Devotion

Object: A mirror

In 1 Samuel 16:7, we read, “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'”

A mirror is a common object that we use daily to see our outward appearance. It reflects what is visible on the surface, showing us our physical features and how we present ourselves to the world. However, just like in the verse above, God’s perspective is different from ours. He looks beyond our external appearance and sees into our hearts—the core of who we are.

When we look into a mirror, we may focus on our flaws, imperfections, or physical beauty. But God’s focus is on our inner being—our thoughts, motives, and character. He sees our true selves, our intentions, and our relationship with Him. Our value and worth doesn’t come from our outward appearance or worldly success-—It comes from the Lord.

Just as a mirror reflects our external image, it can also serve as a reminder to reflect on our hearts before God. Let us strive to cultivate a heart that is pleasing to Him, filled with love, faith, humility, and obedience. Don’t be consumed by superficial appearances or worldly standards but seek to align our hearts with God’s desires for us.

Key Verse

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Reflection Questions

1. How often do you focus on your outward appearance compared to cultivating your inner character?
2. In what ways can you shift your perspective to prioritize what God sees in your heart over external factors?
3. How can you actively work on developing a heart that pleases God and reflects His love to others?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to see ourselves and others through Your eyes, looking beyond outward appearances to the heart. Guide us in cultivating hearts that are pleasing to You and prioritizing spiritual growth over worldly standards. May our lives be a reflection of Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
