Object: A deflated balloon and an inflated balloon
Verse: John 15:11 – “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.” (WEB)
Lesson: Hold up a deflated balloon. On its own, it looks empty, flat, and lifeless. This balloon represents joy that comes from earthly things—like possessions, popularity, or temporary pleasures. These things may give us a little excitement for a moment, but they never last. It’s like living a life that never really fills up.
Now hold up the inflated balloon. When filled with air, it becomes bright, full, and able to rise and move. This balloon represents the joy Jesus gives. His joy doesn’t depend on circumstances, but flows from knowing Him personally and walking in His love. Unlike worldly joys that can “pop” suddenly or are only here for a short-time, but never give true satisfaction, Christ’s joy is lasting, steady, and complete.
Application: If we chase after earthly things for happiness, we’ll always come up empty. But when we turn to Jesus and let His Spirit fill us, we experience true joy that cannot be taken away. Real joy is not about what we have—it’s about who we have in Christ.
Reflection Questions:
- What are some “earthly things” people try to fill their lives with?
- Can you think of a time when earthly joy “popped” quickly for you?
- What does it mean to be filled with Christ’s joy every day?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You offer joy that lasts forever. Help me not to chase after empty things that can’t satisfy. Fill me with Your Spirit so that my joy may be complete in You. Amen.
